Versus 02.19.11
@ Mercury Lounge NYC I was so stoked to see Fontaine and the guys that along with Manny Pacquiao make being Filipino not only cool, but AWESOME. Because I hadn't seen them in awhile, this was probably the most fulfilling Versus show I'd seen since a '95 show at Threadwaxing Space when they single-handedly sparked my love affair with ELO by covering "Livin' Thing" as their last encore. James was missing, but Kendall of Mascott played and sang some and new member Margaret provided keys and very effervescent violin. 'Morning Glory' was a no show, but 'Blade of Grass' was a huge highlight with Fontaine inviting fans to sing the 'ooooooooo's' on stage. Like the best 90s bands, Superchunk, Spent, Pavement, Archers, a great Versus song is like the tunnel in Being John Malkovich - straight back to carefree college days when cutting class didn't matter and being poor seemed to matter less and somehow it was Spring on the cusp of Summer all the time. myspace.com/versusnyc |
