Skybombers 04.19.11
@ Gramercy Theater NYC For some reason, when I first heard the name Skybombers, the images that went through my mind were from the enigmatic Disney war propaganda film Victory Through Air Power - scenes of cartoon red barons strafing European towns and a soundtrack to go along with it. Ah, but turns out they named themselves after a brand of icy-pop, not exactly the inspiration for Ride of The Valkyries. However, it's definitely a more appropriate backstory for their breezy soulful perma-summer-in-Melbourne stylings, and making them a pretty potent opener for California kids Rooney. Though they played a pretty massive room here, this is definitely the type of band you would've wanted to see in a Hamburg '61 type setting, songs and players raw and unpolished laying the groundwork before takeoff as it were. As epic as some of their songs sounded on the big bright stage, I just had the feeling that they'd have more gravity up close and dark and personal, but then that's what secret shows are for.
