Shelby 04.05.04
@ Pianos NYC Shame shame shame on me for taking so damn long to sing the praises of Shelby - and please do quote me on this - the BEST band in NYC that you most likely have never heard of. In a City of 8 million and seemingly twice that many number of bands, there are a few that will undoubtedly fall through the cracks or under the radar of relatively popular consciousness. In the case of the incredible Shelby, were it not for Ms. Rockstarhelper - who lived up to her name by bringing them to my attention - I, and perhaps you, would have fallen victim to the numbers game and would have had some damn good songs and performers deprived from our unknowing memories. Just how a group of musicians collectively so damn good escaped my greedy little ears 'til this show is still beyond me, but rather than dwell on that, let me expound on how Shelby has EVERYTHING that one can possibly want and didn't even know they wanted in a band. Majestic, catchy, intense, and sincere, and armed with a goddamn violin, they just may be the Seachange of NYC, and band that takes some old and some new and some bold and some tried and true to create a sound that is at once timeless and urgent and daresay necessary - music that forces the listener to not only hear but feel - one of the highest aspirations of anyone who's ever played a single note. shelbynyc.com |
