Sarah Jaffe 03.02.11
@ The Living Room NYC One of the most dangerous things for an addictive personality - besides that found full bottle/bag on the club bathroom floor - is the song you can't get out of your head. When it's a bad one, it has the effect of Mary Hart on Kramer. But when it's good - and Sarah Jaffe's 'Clementine' is a DAMN good one, then it starts affecting your brain painting the frames through which you see things as it burrows itself into the soundtrack of your life. 'Clementine' is a haunting, driving, melancholic song full of bitter regret and sweet defiance about getting over something fucked up in the past. Hey who can't relate to that? It became an obsession for me to see this amazing work performed live, and thus it was, experiencing it firsthand front row with piano in place of string and vocal chords in place of ear buds that it seemed way more hopeful than I'd built it up to be. But seeing an artist as talented and beautiful (those eyes!) as Sarah up close 10 feet away will tend to change one's outlook on most things. Shows like this are the reason to go out at all, hell even to get up in the morning sometimes. Funny thing, that wasn't even the best song she played! Winning! Indeed. sarahjaffe.com |
