@ The Knitting Factory NYC Right place right time. There have been a few shows in my time where I was witness to a band hitting that defining point in a rising trajectory just before they blow up. Courtney howling "Doll Parts" with Evan Dando a month after Kurt died in '94. Oasis at Maxwell's in '94. Jewel yodeling opening for Belly in '95. Weezer at the Stone Pony in '95. Rainer Maria at Brownie's in '00. The Walkmen at the Bowery in '02. Rilo Kiley in '03. What makes shows like this so unique is the intimate and electric rapport shared between band and fans. To plagiarize Ted Leo, the tyranny of distance between the two when a band hits, say MTV2, is something that can't be reversed. This is the good time. The second 15 minutes of Behind the Music time. Jenny said that it was exciting for them to have people actually waiting to see them play out in a city. After opening for so many bands in so many places over the past few years, they're more than deserving of the spotlight. To think, most bands that make videos like "The Frug" are somewhere in your local neighborhood used cd bin. rilokiley.com |
