Rachael Yamagata 09.27.03
@ Sin-e NYC Uh - wow. Rachael Yamagata is on her way to very very very big things. A potent combination of an absolutely booming yet delicate voice and even more absolutely stunning smoky looks, she's going to me a household name faster than you can forget Fiona. Walking into Sin-e just as she was starting her first song, I was immediately taken aback by the sheer volume - not loud per se, but immense - of her voice. Seemingly pushing it as far as it could without causing a complete speaker meltdown, she performed an awe-inspiring balancing act of force and delicacy - wielding it like a bliss-inducing weapon. Everything about here seems to exude the epitome of grace, from the tapestries that adorned her keyboard set up to her amicable, at times adorably corny stage banter - like how her pedal kept slipping away from her during the first song and shows she was making a conscious attempt to keep her bangs out of her eyes - but alas failing miserably - not that it took away from her performance, if anything they added an air of mystery - like seeing smoke when you know there's a fire going on. rachaelyamagata.com |
