The Postal Service 04.18.03+04.19.03 @ Bowery Ballroom NYC "And I don't even like Death Cab for Cutie" was the most overheard phrase at last night's Postal Service show, that and "Another Amstel, please". Admittedly, I am guilty of uttering both with frequency, and no dis intended to Ben or the other fellows, but Jenny Lewis really pushed the show that little extra bit over the cliff for me - well her and the Manhattan I had in combination. True, DCFC isn't amongst my favorites, but goddamn if Such Great Heights isn't one of the best songs of the year so far, along with the last track on the new White Stripes and Sea Ray's Revelry. The Brotherhood-era New Order-ishness of that song is what got me over my Death Cab conceived notions, and really he seems like a nice enough fellow and I can see how and why kids are so into them. As far as their live show - and this is something I wish I were a bit more sober for - they put on a whirling dervish of Devo beats, soaring melodies and musical instrument chairs - all in front of a film backdrop that could've been made by Michael Stipe. Yeah, they delivered the goods alright (trite, so sue me), but more than that they licked, stamped, sealed, and dropped us off a helluva lot happier than we were when we walked in. postalservicemusic.net |
