New Moods 05.09.11
@ Knitting Factory Brooklyn

I've known Billy and Sean of New Moods for years in numerous capacities - as fellow partiers, co-workers, fans of (Sean in Icewater Scandal and Billy in Other Passengers) and came out this night to support their new project (plus the show was free) but having heard what sounded like techno music on some tracks I heard, wasn't really expecting all that much.  Holy fucking hell was I wrong in every way!  With the fleshed out addition of Melati of Young Magic on vocals and guitar and Steve drummer for Wolff - they've quickly and utterly morphed into a supergroup spouting out the sounds of Lush, Stereolab, Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, Massive Attack, and every other cool British band of their ilk you may have dropped E to at some point or will in the future.  I'm talking sweeping, swirling, moving, momentous songs that seem born of dark matter and end up hurtling light speed into your ear drums.  Fitting that they've gained their first glimpses of success UK-side before even releasing a record here.

Although I only post photos or shows and bands that I enjoy - otherwise what's the point - but of all the ones I've enjoyed this year and since I've started this site up, this was THE best and their songs have haunted me the most in the days after.  And they say that familiarity breeds contempt, but in the case of my old dear friends, it's brought on one the best musical surprises I've had in a long time.
