Low 12.03.03
@ Bowery Ballroom NYC One would think that the sheer enormity of the depth of Low's epically monstrously solemn songs would make their live shows akin to funeral dirges - but then you'd be sorely mistaken. And while not exactly good time revivals, Alan, Mimi and Zack infuse an almost contradictory but certainly welcome joyous passion into their performances - as if being such grave artists is their calling and they are enjoying every dripping with drama moment for all its worth. Anyone who's ever listened and even more so reveled in a Low album knows the profundities of which they plumb - tapping into a spiritual forever winter netherworld no doubt chiseled into their souls by their native Duluth. They've created a signature sound that has forever set the standard for what hipsters like me call "slow-core" (might as well be "low-core"). And though they didn't play my top four favorite songs by them - all curiously on the brilliant beyond words Things We Lost In the Fire, their nearly two hour set was downright coma inducing - in the best, most morphine like way possible - and far from being a numbing effect, their music actually makes you feel more to the point that nothing else even matters or even makes sense - if that makes any sense. chairkickers.com |
