Kristin Diable 03.16.04 @ The Living Room NYC I used to subscribe to a personal theory (wait, can one actually subscribe from oneself?) that the genre of "solo female with guitar" was one of the most difficult (the other being post-emo band from Florida) in which one could make a name for themself 'cuz everywhere from Joe's Pub in the City to a Starbucks in Des Moines, there are thousands of other women doing pretty much the same thing. A short-sighted and extremely generalist view I now realize in hindsight (well, not the post-emo thing), but there is a kernel of truth in that to the casual observer, unless you can yodel like Jewel, it would be hard to distinguish yourself. Well, after witnessing this performance by Kristin Diable at the acoustic haven The Living Room, I realize that what it really comes down to is little nuances that separate the mediocre from the extraordinary in this quieter side of the game, that goes for boys and girls alike. Kristin's little nuances - actually hugely endearing qualities - channeled from the South charm and soul and, ensconced in velvet voice, and obviously stunning stage presence all combine to make her quite the standout performer this kind of stage or any other. And no gimmicky yodeling here, just straight up songs about love and loss and life - yeah probably just like someone in Iowa, but done exquisitely to the nth degree. kristindiable.com |
