The first time I saw Joan Wasser was in 1996 as half of an incredible duo with Mary Timony at a celebrity-filled (Corin! Fontaine!) gig at Fez - an experience that greatly fueled my desire to go to shows in the City.

The second time I saw her was on the cover of The Dambuilders' Against the Stars, an image so striking that not only did I stick it on the dashboard of my Jeep, but along with Julia Margaret Cameron, served as the greatest influence on my becoming a photographer. Then, in talking to her at this show, I find out that none other than the fucking Snorri brothers (of Snorri-cam fame - 1979 video, Requiem for a Dream) took that photo - unreal beyond words.

This night, Joan was again in trio mode, part of joanaspolicewoman, sans violin, but avec platinum blonde locks. Seeing and hearing her play and sing with such aplomb made me ponder why exactly the hell she didn't do more of all of the above in The Dambuilders.
