Hula 07.09.04 @ Bowery Ballroom NYC For a band that defies a lot of what has come to define and mark the landscape of NYC these past few eventful years, Hula has not only carved a notable and respected niche for themselves but blown a slow-core lovelorn cinematic poignancy fueled soundtrack of a Red Hook loft space in the hearts of those faithful City dwellers who have witnessed their evolution from randomly listed one of a gazillion bands to critics' darlings and NYC mainstays. All of the above came to a fruition this 3H (hot humid hazy) July Friday night as they were pegged literally out of thin air to open for my #1 college daze indie poster girl crush Juliana Hatfield at this prestigious Bowery show. And I can never stress enough how magical that joint is in serving on the same evening as both a sonic playground for golden rock gods and a intimate cathedral for more tenderly sacred artists. Of all the places I've seen them over the past coupla years, the now five members of Hula have never looked more radiant, more passionate, and more at home. They fluttered and seared along and through their set like a butterfly with bullet wings - and no matter what may come of their career as a band after, they've got this one in the vault as a milemarking helluva night.. hulatheband.com |
