Elk City 09.13.03 @ Sin-e NYC Like fellow indie City stalwarts Sea Ray, Elk City has been in the game for so long (3-4 years is a long time for someone under 30!) that it's hard to imagine them not playing around all the time. And also like Sea Ray, that notoriety of familiarity unjustly hasn't translated into a buzzworthy (2¢ to MTV) kind of momentum, until just these recent days, ironically in the wake of bands who are their complete antithesis. Having not seen them since they played with Luna some 1.75 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised that they've stuck with what made them so respected here and loved in Europe, and haven't gone under the knife of some A&R induced stylistic surgery. It's still about Pete's lighting licks, Renee's booming yet soothing voice, and Ray's they don't teach you that at Berklee drumming. And it's all about those three pushing it over the cliff to the nth degree. Without the use of Guitar Center's entire inventory of pedals and processors, Elk City craft these tidal waves of sound that adds a layer of interpretation to their newest record, Hold Tight The Ropes. Add to that a wardrobe as timeless and it is post-modern, and you've got quite the spectacle just bursting to be seen and heard on your hands. elkcity.net |
