Charlotte Martin 06.10.03
@ Sin-e NYC So she didn't play the one song that I went to Sin-é to see her play and she blew me off outside the club - yet despite my whining, there's no way that I couldn't sing the praises of Charlotte Martin. OK, in her defense, I didn't actually request the song I wanted to hear - her heart-rending cover of Just Like Heaven and - I was in the worst. mood. ever. still suffering from sunburn-hangover-vacation lag so I wouldn't have wanted to talk to me either. Plus, there's just no way a dark angelic chanteuse from LA is gonna know which NYC fanboys are cool and which are wankers (by the way, Charlotte, I'm one of the cool ones - on a good day at least) It's only a matter of time before Charlotte has to deal with fanboys en masse all over the place. Admittedly, the gamut of powerful female performers I know of ran through my head while I was watching her perform - but none of them, Liz, Tori, Fiona, Mary T, even Maura radiate the way she does. Everything from her hair to her eyes to her voice just screams in a way that's both powerful and intangible. Hell, look at the pictures, she lit up the usually conservatively lit Sin-e like a goddamn supernova - gothic neon, a black hole sun (fittingly a cover that she did perform). I also have to admit that the gamut of tragically dark gothic ex-girlfriends ran through my head as well during her set. Something in the way she'd fire off these dagger-like stares into the darkness - both daring it and welcoming it to cloak her in its inspiration and in its pain - and turning it into something brighter, something more beautiful. charlottemartin.com |
