Broken Social Scene
06.19.03 - 06.20.03

@ Mercury Lounge NYC

I have seen the future of pop music and it is a 10 headed monster of rock called Broken Social Scene. Believe the hype - which seemed to steamroll into the City from Canada like the damn winter weather - BSS is for real. For a band that no one had heard of to cause a 2 day ruckus at the Merc, there has to be some substance to it. For them, it's the whirling dervish musical chair stage show of it's cavalcade of members - each one seething with talent and - a rarity in the biz - sheer joy.

Seamlessly switching instruments and mics and sharing the spotlight, BSS would probably be a Socialist's dream band. And far from a cacophony of noise, they create the lushest smoothest grooviest songs pregnant with atmosphere and longing. Like fellow Canadian bad asses Eric's Trip (who long time readers know I have a major jones for), their sound is just slightly off-kilter - keeping us on our toes, and never disappointing. Their songs seem to come from a different place - and not just from up North - they paint pictures of a world a bit darker yet a bit more positive too. Like what the soundtrack for The Sweet Hereafter would be if it hadn't been directed at such a snail's pace.
Aesthetically, besides their boundless energy and near constant smiles, they look like they're from Canada. The dudes all have this healthy strapping fresh air log cabin look - you can just tell that where they're from, the air and water are cleaner and the stars and sun are brighter.
