The Affair 12.11.03 @ Mercury Lounge NYC I was supposed to see The Affair on the night of the big blackout in August, but was thwarted obviously and as happens with these sort of things, didn't have the chance to catch them live for the first time until this frigid December night, where The Affair's Kali was her own sparkling livewire of new wave rock star energy. I'd heard that all of her songs were about boys, so I knew that I'd be able to relate (in the sense that all of my band photos seem to involve women). While live shows aren't the best place to hear the deep and exact meaning of lyrics, I could tell enough from the bittersweet emotion and relish with which she delivered them that they come from a hell hath no fury heart. The spirit of Blondie, as Kali is so often spoken of in context with s alive and well in NYC There seems to be a groundswell of buzz for dancier type bands, all interestingly with different vibes, My Favorite, Saintface, Moonraker, and TLA just to name a few. I'm gonna make my own comparison, in that Kali is pretty much the exact opposite of The Hong Kong's Catherine. The former is a whirling dervish disco devil yin to the latter's serene yang. The players in The Affair are as solid as they come; a steady foundation for her to put on her dancing shoes - worn out as they may be from playing gigs and stomping mudholes in foolhardy exes.
